Exploring the Ka'u Coast

THE LONGEST UNDEVELOPED COASTLINE IN HAWAII!

Hale O Luna is located in one of the most sacred places in all of Hawaii – in the Ka`u District, home to ancient temples and pristine blacksand beaches that have survived the modern devolpment of Hawaii. Most famous of all the attractions in Ka`u are the Honu Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles that come to rest on the beach at Punalu’u during the day.

(Just ten minutes from Hale O Luna)

To learn more about the Honu at Punalu`u watch the video below (produced by Danny Miller, your host)

Local Attractions
PUNALU`U BLACK SAND BEACH (10 Min. Drive)

Just a few minutes away is one of the most beautiful beaches in the islands. Here you will find a beautiful black sand beach enjoyed by both turtles and humans. Please stay at least 15 feet from the Green Turtles (Honu). Bring a mask and snorkel so you can swim with these amazing creatures. Be careful while swimming as the current can be swift. Stay close to shore.

WOOD VALLEY TEMPLE (10 Minute Drive )

Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling "Immutable Island of Melodious Sound" is a Buddhist temple and retreat located on 25 acres in Wood Valley. His Holiness the Dali Lama has visited and taught here twice. Here, you can join a guided daily meditation and chanting every morning.

SOUTHPOINT AND GREENSANDS BEACH (30 Minute Drive)

As the landing place for the first Polynesians and the southern most point in the United States, South Point is a must see. Enjoy amazing views from atop the bluffs and steep cliffs. Watch local spear fisherman jump from the cliffs to reach the ocean. Hike to Green Sand Beach – the only green sand beach in the world!

HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (25 Minute Drive)

Established in 1916, this amazing National Park, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The Park is open 24 hours a day year-round.
